The Power of KI

As a long time practitioner of the Japanese martial art of Aikido, George Leonard is familiar with the life force energy that flows through everything it seems. Unfortunately, the nearest term in the West, we need an approach to the nature of this life is the word “energy”. Leonard thinks that this is a poor translation at best. Called ki in Japan, this “energy” is known by many names in many cultures and historical periods: chi in China, prana in India, pneuma in ancient Greece, where in Hawaii, elan vital vitalistic philosophy, Star Wars Force.

Leonard joked that when he saw the movie Star Wars that saw a line uttered by Obi One Kenobi that seems to be directly copied from the book itself, which is called Ultimate, “is the effect that some of the strength that all living things through and go to the end of the universe.” When he met with George Lucas, he learned that Luke was influenced by his writings.

For Leonard, Aikido is a way to live in harmony with the spirit of the universe. Importantly, he noted that at one point in scientific paradigm must go “evidence” and “faith” and leave instead must engage in direct experience with ki aikido. As Leonard himself said: “I do not believe in ki, I just do it.” Because the West is so fascinated with violence and force, has a smooth landscape ki.

Leonard said some funny experiences with nature ki, which he faced men much bigger and stronger than him. In a demonstration for the participants in the conference, Leonard showed repulsive force ki by Steve Dinan. When energy face Steve Leonard, he immediately felt the urge to give up, because the power is so strong ki Leonard. After the demonstration, Leonard stressed that ki can be improved by visualization and images, and it is a qualitatively different experience than muscle.

So how can we explain the phenomenon of ki? Leonard offers a number of ideas are being explored. Some researchers are investigating the electromagnetic field of the human body, while the other to the electro-static field. Leonard called January Wallenczak studies at Stanford, which has shown that the effects occur below the thermal barrier (KT), where, according to classical physics, this should not happen. Other, more radical theories and studies also appear as string theory and M-theory in physics.

Leonard also called zero point energy theory Putoff Harold. A growing orientation is that we went swimming in the energy that is all around us. Leonard thinks we need to examine how human intentionality can serve as a bridge to energy everywhere to open. Just like Marilyn Schlitz, Leonard believes that human intentionality is a vague power, but it is very important that we are only beginning to understand. Leonard was very curious about how the intentionality associated with the subtle energy properties, such as ki.

After a brief presentation, Leonard has some important points to emphasize in conclusion. First he offered that ki properties can also be included in a comprehensive theory of evolution. He said that even though gravity is the weakest of the four known physical forces, the range is endless, and overcome all in the end. Maybe ki and like gravity in this case. Leonard also said that after many years of experience in teaching people about the nature of ki, he realized that all the necessary permits to begin the seemingly remarkable ability to open.

Finally, Leonard offers important orientation for the entire conference. Because the western scientific world so determined to find a specific and proven “truth” we often miss the mystery and magic of it all. Leonard rhapsodized that we live in the universe can be weighed from the unexpected, truth beauty and mystery. The only thing that will ever hinder our search for the truth is the nature of our minds. We must always remain curious and open to new perspectives and new horizons. Leonard ends with a poem summarizing this vision:

Do not think this is all there is
More and more beautiful teachings there
The sword is unexpected

Zanshin

There is an ancient Japanese samurai said: “If the battle is over, tighten the chin strap.” It refers to the constant awareness, preparedness and willingness to take risks. Japanese proverb focuses on the end of combat engagement when the mind to relax, think the danger is over, when in fact frequently. “The concept was brought to the dojo not only the training room, but a place where a certain awareness of the possibility of heavy fighting to be maintained,” said John Donohue in his article Kendo: Way of the Sword. However, for the serious martial artist high state of consciousness is a natural part of life, something that is automatically activated when awake and during sleep.

Students in practice karate and word completion will be expected to stand still for a few seconds. It is the practice of zanshin – maintain readiness to act, even though the physical aspects of a particular word is completed. In iaido, said partner practice with wooden swords. From the moment the players face each other until they cum together, zanshin trainees. Sense of awareness, movement potentially dangerous partner in security practices, to master the technique. Zanshin also supports a good technique in the word. The idea behind the partner practice that technique becomes second nature, while zanshin developed further. In aikido, Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and other arts, when the technique is completed (often the attacker to the ground subject) defender carefully taught to his consciousness, and maintain a position of superiority readiness for action to proceed if necessary – zanshin.

“At one level, zanshin refers neutral, non-threatening substances or kneel in a way that is always ready for action Zanshin is the other side of the single-minded devotion to the art .. you have to learn not just to focus on your actions, but to be attentive and receive all activity around you, “said Donohue. It may seem contradictory, he continued, “but the two ideas are totally focused on the technology and the maintenance of zanshin to do with the transcendence of the subject object distinction through martial training unitary Void., For (Japanese swordsman famious) Musashi idiom to be used, resulting in the implementation of techniques that can be performed without consciousness. Similarly, good zanshin indicates that the sword is no discontinuity between the environment and individual experience. ”

Different martial arts have different ways of training to develop increasing zanshin. Opponents are sometimes allowed to attack from behind for almost intuitive sense of impending attack to develop. Other exercises are put back in the middle of the circle opponents fall one by one and sometimes in groups – defender with awareness and / or intuition to attack, often in combination with a motion for protection. In the style of karate (Seido) trains students to black belt test blind folded and then led through the streets of New York City to their senses and consciousness. Often students reported that the experience made them pop open senses, every sound, the source and direction, or the feel of the floor, the feelings of others around – all to increase and experience like never before.

There is an old Japanese story about a young man who wants to teach a great warrior. Once accepted, students have several years of personal service – cooking, washing and cleaning of the teacher. Then the class began, but did not practice with the sword. The teacher began staggering
him with a relentless attack with sword practice – when students are cooking, sleeping, at all times. Over time students reduce pain and bruising as he gradually learns to avoid and evade attacks. Finally, the students asked the teacher if a real sword training is to begin. The teacher then said that he learned all he needs to learn. This is total awareness zanshin as students can feel and avoid attacks.

Zanshin is what a lot of soldiers, policemen and advanced martial artists seeking to develop. In some forms of Zen meditation and, zanshin is a destination for students – a total of attentiveness as: focusing the mind (without thought or emotion) to everything around them.

Suenaka Roy, author of Aikido Complete, tells the story of the founder of aikido, which is a symbol of this concept. They sat on the floor face to face with tea and talking when Morihei Ueshiba, without turning his head, reaching behind and holding Suenaka something to see. “Ah, young cockroaches,” he said, before gently putting it on the side. Only then struck Suenaka meaning. How Ueshiba was well aware that, even when focusing on their conversation he could not simply the presence of something so small to feel, but you know exactly who it was so, that he was able to pick it up without watching?

Seiza (sitting)

Seiza posture is one of the most common in the Japanese martial arts, with students assuming this attitude at the beginning and end of the training session to formally bow, meditation etc. Aikido, in particular, using Seiza for basic moves to learn, a technique performed “on knee “(Suwari-waza) and many schools use Seiza Iaijutsu as a basis for the foundation.

Seiza words written with two Chinese characters, “sei” means “correct, correct, correct” (and thus can be said Tadashi, what is “right” or “appropriate”) and “Sat” meaning “posture” (written with ideograms that looks like a person sitting on the floor under one roof raised).

In Japanese culture, sitting in Seiza (kneeling, sitting at the ankle) is the most correct formal posture, beautiful, and “good”, especially when sitting inside (usually on the tatami mats).

Many people complain that Seiza make their feet “go to sleep” (known in Japan as “shibireru”), but this is likely due to the lack of proper training, weak muscles and poor circulation, not necessarily because of the position of sitting in Seiza. If one is good, one should be able to do Seiza for anything up to an hour a day without discomfort.

Seiza right, helps naturally align your body and the spine, focusing on the “center” and leads to an alert mind and body – then commonly used in meditation.

Different schools of martial arts can have slightly different versions of Seiza, but a rough guide, in Seiza is as follows:

• Sit with knees tucked under your feet, with your thumb on the left leg over the other.

• Knee one to two fists together.
• Sit with your back straight, but in a relaxed position.

• Natural Let your hands in your lap.

Aikido principle of representation by geometric triangle, circle and square of Shinto cosmology theory “Gogyo Gogen” in which the elements of life, liquid, solid and gas are all proven and mutually transmutable.

In his book “We no Michi”, Rev Dr Yukitaka Yamamoto, generation 96 Shinto Priest (Guji) wrote:

“The principle of ‘Sanmi-Sangen’ explains the mystery of life Sanmi-Sangen means the three elements that form the basis of all forms of existence .. good basic symbols to explain the meaning and guiding the destiny of human life. We can see Sanmi-Sangen works on many levels.”
O Sensei saw clearly the relationship between the theory and principles of Aikido – The following diagram attempts to show how the three shapes not only the core principles of an individual, but the relationship symbolizes everything.

The form the core of Aikido, spiral, indicated by a circle, appearing everywhere in the universe. A definite “5/7 logarithmic spiral”, is identical in disc galaxies (eg, the Milky Way), the DNA strands and sub??-atomic particles – O Sensei learned that Ki through the body in a large spiral, on the basis of the flow of the universe.

In very simple terms, the triangle can be said that the attitude prevalent in Aikido triangle, triangulation arms to the center / hips and offline triangles and squares solidity avoid the attitude, or the principles of “heavy-bottom” represents represents.

Safe Stretching

Aikido, like any physical activity, based on a healthy body. One important factor in maintaining physical regimen flexibility through proper stretching and though almost all activities spanning Aikido in one form or another, it is important to get the proper stretching exercises to build up in the pre-practice warm-up, and at the end of the session, as part of “warm-down”.

Stretching is different from warming! It is an important part of foreplay. Warming is literally the “warm up” or increase your body temperature. A proper warm up should increase your body temperature by one or two degrees Celsius. It is very important for your general warm up before you stretch.

Heating can do more than just loosen stiff muscles, when done correctly, it can actually increase muscle performance. On the other hand, poor heating, or no heating at all, can increase the risk of subsequent injury.

Ideally, a particular route only work the muscles you are trying to stretch. Isolating muscles work with a given stretch means that you do not have to worry about having a resistance by more than one muscle group to overcome. In general, the less muscle you are trying the same, better shelf.

Any decent Aikido instructor (especially those who have qualified coaching) should know the difference between the safe and unsafe.

Proper breathing is important when stretching. Proper breathing helps to relax the body, increases blood flow and helps remove lactic acid from the muscles. Take a slow, relaxed breathing as you stretch, exhale as the muscle is stretched.
The proper way to breathe is to inhale slowly through your nose, expanding the abdomen (not the chest), hold your breath for a moment, then slowly exhale through the nose or mouth.

Basic Rules of Stretching
• The first warm-up
• Non-ballistic that stretch. use movement “bounce”
• Hold your breath while stretching
• Stretch slowly and gently
• Try to keep your stretch for about 20-30 seconds
• Pain is the brain’s way of telling you to stop!
• If the tendons and ligaments stretch, do not!
